We are happy to hear of your interest in rotating at Sparrow Hospital and McLaren Regional Medical Center.
The Emergency Department at Sparrow Hospital is a community-based academic facility with a patient volume of more than 100,000 visits annually serving the half million residents of the greater Lansing area. The Emergency Department is a Level 1 trauma center in addition to a center for Stroke Care excellence. A dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department has a patient volume of approximately 28,000 visits a year making this the second largest dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department in Michigan. McLaren Hospital- Lansing is a Level 2 community-based trauma center with a patient volume of 55,000 patient's seen yearly.
Medical students are welcomed throughout the year at Sparrow Hospital and McLaren Hospital. A dedicated medical student curriculum addressing key topics in Emergency Medicine is combined with a strong clinical experience. Medical students typically work in the high-acuity area of the Emergency Department (typically 15-16 8.5 hour shifts) with an emphasis placed on seeing the wide variety of patient’s that might present to a large community based ED. Students work clinically side by side with the 30+ Emergency Department residents as well as attending staff in addition to attending all resident educational events (didactics, simulation labs, procedure labs, etc).
All interested medical students that would like to be considered for a rotation in our Emergency Department should apply through the VSAS link at: https://www.aamc.org/students/medstudents/vsas/
